We have now fixed the logic of how high risk medications work during their administration by implementing several enhancements and fixing some issues for this type of drugs.
High risk meds are those medicines that have a high risk of causing significant patient harm when used in error. Since this type of drugs require a very different type of handling by the hospital, we needed to improve their application to offset against any potential harm from applying these meds.
See more details here :
Validity Days will always be for 1 day.
Now, after configurating any drugs in Charge Master II as as a High Risk drug, validity days for this type of drug will always have one day as a default since this type of drugs cannot be administered after their preparation for longer than that period.
Frequency is still a must but you must consider that validity will always have 1 days as a default (this field and PRN checkbox will appear as locked for this type for drugs).
This will apply for every prescription window :
Orders
Medical Schedule
Same in CPOE medication orders from Medical Schedule, where you will see also a warning message telling you this is a High Risk drug :
Discharge Medications
The same for discharge medications, where if you try prescribing high risk medications, both validity and PRN will appear as locked :
Prescription window
And in Rx option from Prescription window :
Important :
Every prescription window will automatically lock Validity days and PRN when prescribing High Risk meds since this type of medications must be prescribed cautiously.
High Risk Medications indicator.
Now, when adding medications, High Risk medications will always include a flag or indicator ⚠️that will alert users about this type of drugs in any screen and report showing details about them. This indicator will be displayed in the following functionalities :
Reports
Warning indicator next to drug name on reports (Report of execution of appointments).
Discharge Medications
Discharge Medications and Orders wil also feature a red flag for High Risk drugs, letting you know this drug is a high risk medication (see detail below) :
eMAR
Same in eMAR of all dashboards that feature prescribed drugs and in EPR window :
Requested only by physicians.
From now on and due to their potential harm when used in error, high risk meds can now be requested only by physicians, preventing other users from requesting these meds (such as Nursing staff). If any nurse from your organization must also perform these actions, we must edit their Nurse user by selecting the Prescribe High Risk Med checkbox in Nurse window :
This will allow this nurse only to request High Risk medications, in case they need it. Any other nurse will see the following error message when trying to order this type of meds:
If they have this activation, then they will see only the High Risk warning message:
Administration requires double authentication by another nurse.
In order to double authenticate the administration of this type of medications, another nurse must have to enter their credentials in order to validate the administration of this type of drugs (eMAR window). This to prevent users from any drug administration errors that might cause harm on patients.
This double-step authentication must be requested via ticket or chat and their configuration must be performed by the ECS Team in Improvement Settings window:
Once activated, double authentication will work as follows:
On eMAR window you will see a red flag icon for products with the High Risk configuration. In our example we have selected those :
Then, to administer these selected meds, click context menu and select Administered :
Fill-up missing data and confirm :
Here you will see a Double Authentication where another nurse must enter their Cirrus credentials (User ID , Password ) :
We hope this improves your Cirrus experience. Remember to share this information and ask for help if you need it.
